What a camera operator day in Dubai includes
The day rate covers one cameraman and the kit that travels with the operator. Cameras are a Sony FX6 as the A camera and a Sony A7 IV as the B camera or stills body, with a set of lenses covering wide to portrait, ND built into the FX6 for exteriors, a tripod, wireless lavalier audio and a compact lighting kit for interviews and pieces to camera. Recording is 4K, in S-Log3 when your editor wants to grade or in Rec.709 when the footage needs to be usable the moment it lands. Frame rate, codec and audio channel layout are confirmed before the day so nothing has to be transcoded at your end.
Handover happens on site. Cards are copied to your drive and to a second backup before the operator leaves, in a folder structure sorted by camera and card, with a quick verification pass so a corrupt clip is found on the day and not a week later in another country. There is no edit in the day rate: the footage is yours outright, the same evening, for your editor, your newsroom or your agency's post house. Working with visiting productions and broadcasters in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
A production landing at DXB with a director and a producer but no local crew needs three things from a Dubai cameraman: kit that is already here, so nothing goes through customs, knowledge of where the shots are, and knowledge of what needs a permit. Filming inside a hotel, office or private venue usually needs the owner's permission and nothing more. Filming in public spaces, on the streets, beaches, the Marina walk or Downtown, goes through the Dubai Film and TV Commission, which wants the application in advance and is flagged at booking so it is not discovered on the morning. Exhibition halls at DWTC and ADNEC usually issue media accreditation through the organiser. Industrial sites in JAFZA or Dubai Industrial City need PPE, an induction and often a gate pass in the operator's name.
Timing is the other local knowledge. The working week runs Monday to Friday, with a short Friday at government entities, and shoots there and at many offices are planned around that and around prayer times, which shift through the year and matter when an interviewee is expected at noon. Ramadan changes working hours and what can be filmed in public during the day. October to December is the peak season, when GITEX Global, ADIPEC and the conference calendar fill the halls, hotel rates climb and crew days book out weeks ahead, so an early hold is worth more than a late one. Abu Dhabi bookings at ADNEC, Yas Island or Saadiyat run on the same day rate with travel inside the proposal. Drone shots go through a licensed GCAA and DCAA partner, quoted as a separate line, because the operator does not fly.
